2009 Lewmar VARC Closer Regatta, held in Vancouver, BC on October 24-25

All six Farr 30's from the BC Fleet sailed as a one design class within the Vancouver Area Racing Council's 2009 season-closing regatta, the 2009 Lewmar VARC Closer Regatta.

Royal Vancouver Yacht Club's race committee PRO James McDonald ran two races on Saturday and two races on Sunday, each windward-leeward and twice around. Racing was delayed Saturday until a Westerly filled in at 6 knots under blue skies and the wind remained light and patchy for the afternoon. The second race was shortened at the second weather mark rounding due to a dying breeze. Conditions rewarded competitors who stayed in pressure and who had upwind boat speed and point in light air and choppy water.

Saturday, Andrew Hamilton's Through led comfortably with a bullet and a second, with second held by Darren Burns' Idiopathic with a fourth and a bullet. David Sutcliffe's Kinetic IV was consistent with two thirds for third place for the day.

Sunday's racing was delayed until shifty winds from the Southwest, Southeast, East and North settled down into an Easterly of 7-8 knots blowing under cloudy skies from downtown. The warning signal for the first race heralded an increase in pressure to 10 knots and the wind built to 14 knots, in flat water, as the race progressed. The Race Committee signaled the second race very quickly as the wind ranged from 14 to 18 knots, still with flat water. Boat speed and handling were critical factors Sunday, along with favoring the North side of the course in both races.

Through added two more bullets to lead Sunday's results, Kinetic IV was again consistent with two seconds for second on the day, and Idiopathic and Rich Alban's Spiny Norman each counted a third and a fourth. Short Circuit and M Power sailed aggressively throughout the regatta, keeping the pressure up on the middle of the fleet.

The Royal Vancouver Yacht Club provided guest moorage for visiting boats and RVYC's Race Committee did a commendable job in challenging conditions. Title sponsor Lewmar supplied loads of high quality door prizes. Another full turnout of the BC Farr 30 Fleet made for excellent one design racing. With the close of the 2009 VARC season, the BC Farr 30 Fleet will turn its attention to Snowflake racing which consists of nine races in two series held from November through March.

Thunderbird Marine Supplies Howe Sound Regatta, held in Vancouver, BC on September 26-27

Six Farr 30's sailed as the only one design class within the event's overall fleet of 35 boats. West Vancouver Yacht Club's race committee PRO Brent Foxall ran three races, each windward-leeward and twice around. Saturday's Westerly wind started as 12-15 knots and quickly built to over 25 knots. Conditions rewarded superior heavy air boat handling. Saturday, Andrew Hamilton's Through took two bullets and a second, edging Rich Alban's Spiny Norman with two seconds and a bullet.

Boat speeds in the teens combined with sunny skies and mild late-summer temperatures to put a smile on everyone's faces. After racing, fleet spirit was on display at WVYC's docks as Farr 30's shared spare parts and resources to make repairs and get everybody back on the water for day two. Sunday's racing started with the RC setting a longer windward leeward course in fickle Howe Sound outflow winds for race four before a convergence with Westerly's in Georgia Strait forced the course to be reset back to Saturday's course.

Races five and six were sailed in light to moderate conditions with leftover swell making it difficult to read the current and shifts. Light air speed and strategy, along with parking lot avoidance, were critical factors Sunday. Spiny Norman counted two bullets and a fifth, allowing Through to add a point to their lead with a first-second-third scoreline. Opening things up a bit, Kinetic IV and Idiopathic broke into the top two for a race each on Sunday. M Power and Short Circuit kept the pressure up and as a result the fleet had some very tight finish sequences.

Top-notch RC work, a variety of conditions and a full turnout of the BC Farr 30 Fleet made for an excellent regatta.

The BC Fleet's next Farr 30 one design event is coming up fast - the VARC Closer Regatta, hosted by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club on October 24-25. This will be the final event in the BC Fleet Championship Series for 2009.

Martin Marine Deep Cove Regatta held in Vancouver, BC on Sep 12-13.

Five Farr 30's sailing as a one design class were part of the 45 participating boats. Sunny weather, six to twelve knot breezes, significant currents and some interesting courses made for a fun and challenging weekend. Race management and guest moorage were provided by the Deep Cove Yacht Club.

Congratulations to Through on a well-sailed event. Sportsmanship kudo's to Spiny Norman for retiring from race 7 after realizing that they didn't sail the course properly. The short-handed award goes to Idiopathic for finishing third with a crew of only five. Three of the five boats took bullets in the seven race event.

The BC Fleet's next Farr 30 one design event is coming up fast - Howe Sound Regatta hosted by the West Vancouver Yacht Club on Sep 26-27. This will be the third of four events which make up the BC Fleet Championship Series for 2009.

The Vancouver Area Racing Council (VARC) 2009 racing season got underway this weekend with the 2009 Harken VARC Opener Regatta hosted by the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. Six Farr 30's from the BC Fleet sailed as a One Design class at this annual event which offers both One Design and Handicap classes.

Saturday morning was overcast and drizzly, just above freezing; it felt much more like Winter than Spring. Racing started at 1100 with the Race Committee's James McDonald setting a 1.5 mile windward-leeward, twice-around course in English Bay and jamming four races into the day for the Farr 30 class. Winds were from the NW and initially very shifty, with a wind speed of about seven to eight knots for the first two races and a modest build to nine to ten knots for races three and four. As the day progressed the weather lifted and by late afternoon the sun was out. At the end of the first day of racing, "Spiny Norman", skippered by Rich Alban, topped the fleet with a 2-1-2-2 scoreline. "Through", skippered by Hunter Lowden, was close behind with a 1-2-3-3 record. "Idiopathic", skippered by Darren Burns, secured third for the day with a 3-3-1-4 result. The last bullet of the day was secured by "Kinetic IV", skippered by David Sutcliffe, with the result that the four bullets were spread among four different boats. After racing, the crews retired ashore for the Farr 30 BC Fleet's social gathering, sponsored by the Farr 30 Class Association. Recently appointed Farr 30 West Coast measurer Don Martin was in attendance. Food, refreshments and stories were shared by all.

Sunday dawned a cool 1C/34F with brilliant sunshine highlighting the snow-capped North Shore mountains which overlook Vancouver's picturesque harbor. The race committee was on station early, waiting for an un-forecast Easterly to die off and the predicted Westerly to fill in. After a brief postponement, the Westerly filled in at seven to eight knots and the RC set another windward-leeward, twice-around course. Race 5 got underway and the series lead was quickly shaken up on the first beat when "Spiny Norman" retired from the race following a navigational error. "Through" and "Idiopathic" capitalized. Race 6 featured the first four boats crossing the finish line just seconds apart. The wind built and the air temperature rose as the day progressed, with Race 7 sailed in 15 knots, gusting 18. "Short Circuit" demonstrated improving speed. "M Power" retired from Race 7 after doing a textbook-perfect man overboard recovery from the chilly 7C/45F water. Results for the second day of racing: "Idiopathic" sailed a nearly-perfect 2-1-1 for first; "Kinetic IV" followed in second with 3-2-3 and "Through" was third with 1-4-5. The fleet headed to the marina and clubhouse for another social and for the regatta awards.
